The Broncos
Beginning as a charter member in the AFL in 1960, then going into the NFL 10 years later, the Broncos didn’t have a winning season until 1973. However, by 1975 they emerged as one of the most successful teams in the NFL. Having only 6 losing seasons in the 40 seasons since! They currently play at Sports Authority Field, having moved from Mile High Stadium in 2001. This year they have made a great 5-0 start and are one of the favorites to go all the way to the Super Bowl. Do you have your orange ready?
Play Ball!
The Colorado Rockies, based in Denver, is part of the National League’s West Division and call Coors Stadium “home.” In 1991 Major League baseball expanded by 2 teams. The Florida Marlins came into being, and investment groups lobbied for Denver to be chosen for the home of the second new team. They chose the name for Denver’s nearness to the Rocky Mountains.
Slam Dunks and 3-Pointers
One of the benefits to living in a fairly robust city is having a lot of sports to choose from. Not a fan of either listed above? Denver has the Nuggets, their NBA basketball team. The team started out as “Denver Lark,” but later decided on their current moniker. They play in the Pepsi Center, which they share with the Avalanche.
Hockey at its Finest
The Colorado Avalanche are also based her in Denver, Co. They are in the central division for the western conference in the NHL. They moved to Denver after the 94-95 season and proceeded to win 8 straight playoff titles. This is currently the longest win run in NHL history.
Real “Football”
Tucked in one of the Denver’s suburbs, Commerce City, the Colorado Rapids are making a name for themselves in the Major League Soccer association. They were one of the founding teams in MLS and used to play at Mile High before moving to Dick’s Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, CO. The team continues to improve and the venue is one of the best for professional soccer.
