As the weather grows colder, and winter comes near, many of those in Denver turn their thoughts toward skiing. Colorado has earlier ski resort opening dates than any other state in the US. Twenty-five of our many ski resorts are within a hundred miles of Denver.

Safer Conditions Shaping Up in the Mountains this Year
Even if winter sports have an element of danger, we all want to be safe on the slopes. There is great news for this winter! Meteorologists and avalanche forecasters in and around Denver say that due to the mild autumn and late snow in Denver, the snow will likely be packed tighter this year than in years past. The last two years the snow fall was early, and there were long dry periods.
This made the base layer of snow quite weak and vulnerable to large, unpredictable avalanches. Both of the previous two years saw above average (6/yr.) avalanche fatalities. Last year there were 8, and 10 the year before. There will be a more stable snowpack and safer conditions in the back country this winter because of the lack of early season snow.
The Director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, Ethan Greene, said “having snow-free mountains right now is not a bad thing for us.” Granted, for those Denver Winter sports enthusiasts, waiting for the resorts to open so they can drive up and get their fix seems to take forever. But reminding ourselves that the safety is worth the wait, may give those of us in the Denver Metro enough patience to wait for the snow and know we are going to enjoy a safe, albeit somewhat shorter, ski season.
