For the employees of Malbur Exchange Group & Associates (MEGA 1031) things that go bump in the night…well, day isn’t unusual. In fact, it’s just part of their working day because the offices of MEGA 1031 are located in one of Denver’s most haunted mansions, the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion.
A regular on many haunted TV shows, most recently the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventurers, the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion has come to dis-embody living amongst the dead in a symbiotic working/un-living relationship.
Denver's Millionaires Row
The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion located at 1128 Grant Street was built in what was known in the 1800s as Millionaires Row. The famous mansion was built for Dr. William Riddick Whitehead by the celebrated Denver architect Frank Edbrooke who also built the Brown Palace Hotel. Dr. Whitehead was a battlefield surgeon who saw many atrocities during the Russian Crimean War and the American Civil War. Some say he may have carried some of those lost souls with him to the new mansion.
But one man who certainly was accountable for many lost souls was the following resident, Republican Governor James Peabody. The three-story, 6,635 square foot brick mansion served as the Governor’s mansion for two years. Here, Gov. Peabody sent out gauche orders that effected many miners and was the cause of several of their deaths. These were the turbulent years of the miner’s strikes. Gov. Peabody’s heavy-handed solution was to declare martial law and send the militia to round up striking miners. Overall, this was a period run by John D. Rockefeller Jr. for dominance of power over unions and workers who were asking for eight-hour work days. It was a charged time in Colorado which was often spotlighted in the national media for the violent uprisings and suppression of miner’s strikes.
Ghostly Activities
All this seems to have been carried on in spirit. Many years after its original residents passed on, the mansion was remodeled for a series of restaurants and nightclubs. All reported regular ghostly activities of trays being tipped over, dishes and glassware suddenly breaking, knives, forks, pots and pans soaring about in the kitchen and dining areas. Often customers and employees were laid siege by the ringing of disconnected servants’ bells and phones, flashing lights and knocks on the walls and floors.
One of the most famous manifestations was a flickering chandelier. When the restaurant manager called an electrician to fix the aggravating problem, the electrician reported that he couldn’t do anything about it because the chandelier wasn’t even connected to any electrical wiring.
Today, the MEGA 1031 group work in harmony with the benevolent spirits. They tolerate the cherry scented pipe tobacco in the bathroom that comes and goes mysteriously, the reshuffling of paperwork, the felled books from their shelves, the repeatedly appearing numbers on calculators in locked offices and the occasional eerie sightings.
