In addition to these amazing Denver Zoo events, there is entertainment on the calendar for each and every day of the month of December, with the only exception being Christmas Eve and Christmas Day so that the Denver Zoo staff can have those days to celebrate with their loved ones. The entertainment is top notch, too. There is a Kwanzaa Story Teller, accentuated by a talented backdrop of African Drumming and Dancing during the last week in December.

New Year’s Eve in Denver

On New Year’s Eve (Zoo Year’s Eve), the Denver Zoo is providing face painting, a dance party and a magic show to entertain your children and perhaps wear them out by 9, so their parents can take them home and toast the new year with an adult beverage. This is particularly advisable, as Denver just ranked number 2 on Livability.com’s 10 Best Beer Cities list! So, go get your dance on and pick up a wonderful craft beer on the way home. Now that’s entertainment... Denver style!

If dancing isn’t your cup of tea, how do you feel about sitting on a stranger’s lap? Okay, but there’s ice sculpting! The weeks before Christmas offer an Ice Carver, Santa and vocal music provided by various local Denver choirs and organizations. So, how much will this entertainment cost the average resident of the Denver Metro? You should be aware that the Denver Zoo’s general admission tickets do not cover the Zoo Lights attractions. The zoo will close its doors to “standard zoo visitors” at 5pm and reopen at 5:30 for the Denver Zoo Lights Exhibit. If you are a zoo member, you will get all this quality entertainment for the bargain basement price of $11 for an adult ticket and $7 for any children you are brave enough to bring with you. If you are not a zoo member, perhaps you should consider it. Because you are going to want to go again and again to see the different exhibits and entertainment stages, and it will cost you a whopping $13 for you and your adult companions and $9 for the neighbor children who snuck into your back seat when you weren’t looking. Safer Conditions Shaping Up in the Mountains this Year

Even if winter sports have an element of danger, we all want to be safe on the slopes. There is great news for this winter! Meteorologists and avalanche forecasters in and around Denver say that due to the mild autumn and late snow in Denver, the snow will likely be packed tighter this year than in years past. The last two years the snow fall was early, and there were long dry periods.

This made the base layer of snow quite weak and vulnerable to large, unpredictable avalanches. Both of the previous two years saw above average (6/yr.) avalanche fatalities.  Last year there were 8, and 10 the year before. There will be a more stable snowpack and safer conditions in the back country this winter because of the lack of early season snow.

The Director of the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, Ethan Greene, said “having snow-free mountains right now is not a bad thing for us.” Granted, for those Denver Winter sports enthusiasts, waiting for the resorts to open so they can drive up and get their fix seems to take forever. But reminding ourselves that the safety is worth the wait, may give those of us in the Denver Metro enough patience to wait for the snow and know we are going to enjoy a safe, albeit somewhat shorter, ski season.

For the employees of Malbur Exchange Group & Associates (MEGA 1031) things that go bump in the night…well, day isn’t unusual. In fact, it’s just part of their working day because the offices of MEGA 1031 are located in one of Denver’s most haunted mansions, the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion.

A regular on many haunted TV shows, most recently the Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventurers, the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion has come to dis-embody living amongst the dead in a symbiotic working/un-living relationship.

Denver's Millionaires Row

The Peabody-Whitehead Mansion located at 1128 Grant Street was built in what was known in the 1800s as Millionaires Row. The famous mansion was built for Dr. William Riddick Whitehead by the celebrated Denver architect Frank Edbrooke who also built the Brown Palace Hotel. Dr. Whitehead was a battlefield surgeon who saw many atrocities during the Russian Crimean War and the American Civil War. Some say he may have carried some of those lost souls with him to the new mansion.

But one man who certainly was accountable for many lost souls was the following resident, Republican Governor James Peabody. The three-story, 6,635 square foot brick mansion served as the Governor’s mansion for two years. Here, Gov. Peabody sent out gauche orders that effected many miners and was the cause of several of their deaths. These were the turbulent years of the miner’s strikes. Gov. Peabody’s heavy-handed solution was to declare martial law and send the militia to round up striking miners. Overall, this was a period run by John D. Rockefeller Jr. for dominance of power over unions and workers who were asking for eight-hour work days. It was a charged time in Colorado which was often spotlighted in the national media for the violent uprisings and suppression of miner’s strikes.

Ghostly Activities

All this seems to have been carried on in spirit. Many years after its original residents passed on, the mansion was remodeled for a series of restaurants and nightclubs. All reported regular ghostly activities of trays being tipped over, dishes and glassware suddenly breaking, knives, forks, pots and pans soaring about in the kitchen and dining areas. Often customers and employees were laid siege by the ringing of disconnected servants’ bells and phones, flashing lights and knocks on the walls and floors.

One of the most famous manifestations was a flickering chandelier. When the restaurant manager called an electrician to fix the aggravating problem, the electrician reported that he couldn’t do anything about it because the chandelier wasn’t even connected to any electrical wiring.

Today, the MEGA 1031 group work in harmony with the benevolent spirits. They tolerate the cherry scented pipe tobacco in the bathroom that comes and goes mysteriously, the reshuffling of paperwork, the felled books from their shelves, the repeatedly appearing numbers on calculators in locked offices and the occasional eerie sightings.

While legislators, pro- and anti-pot advocates point at elevated, proposed and expected revenue numbers, there’s no doubt that the business of marijuana is on the up-and-up. And no other company exemplifies this better than My 420 Tours. While I waited to interview Jenny from My 420 Tours and stood outside of the Grand Plaza Hotel in downtown Denver, one of the few pot-friendly hotels in the state, two journalists from Sweden interviewed the passengers as they dismounted a Limobus. For the world watching, what is unraveling here in Colorado is, in the words of Governor Hickenlooper, “the great social experiment of the 21st century.”

“There’s a huge brainwash, you know, stigma,” said Paul from Atlanta. “There’s no way you could be a professional and smoke weed. We came out here to smoke legal marijuana.”

“Where I’m from,” Nick from Kentucky explained, “everybody smokes, but nobody talks about it. The tour is the best way to experience this new experience of legal marijuana. Where else or how else can you go into a grow facility?”

Jerrod from Memphis subscribes to travel alerts online. He was alerted to a $160 flight to Denver and googled marijuana tours. My 420 Tours popped up.

Nick, who does sales and marketing for My 420 Tours, came out on a tour last year and decided to move to Colorado to join in what he saw as a thriving industry. “I hadn’t talked to My 420 Tours, but eventually they let me into the family. It’s fun. You get to meet people from all over the country. The people in Colorado are already pretty chilled about it anyway.”

Part of the logistical nightmare for the state in pinpointing the amount of revenue that will be collected is that while predictions of sales of marijuana were made, many Coloradoans are still buying from their black market connections. In time, they believe, this will change. But 90% of the tourists at My 420 Tours are from out of state, 10% are from out of the country. In short, not many Coloradoans are taking these tours.

In Michigan a radio station is giving away tickets for an all-inclusive trip with My 420 Tours, which will include a hotel room at the Crown Plaza Hotel. Since smoking in rooms is not allowed, participants receive a vaporizer when they arrive and an edible as part of the welcome package. This is the respectful alternative because, though smoking is legal, it is illegal to smoke in public. One of the biggest issues faced by tourists is where to smoke legally, a problem that is working itself out independently, but still a legal quagmire.

The Tour

Cost: $168.75 after tax. So $150.00 is advertised. With a large full group it can be up to 200 people. Today there were only 16. Participants meet at the Crown Plaza Hotel on Friday night for a meet and greet and a rundown on laws. They are given coupons in their swag bag for places around town. On Saturday morning the bus leaves at 11:00 a.m. Everybody smokes and consumes and has fun; it’s a big party bus. It’s typical in the morning to have everyone wondering, looking at one another as if thinking, ‘is this for real’. The bus takes the tourists to Elluzion Glass Gallery where they learn the art of glass blowing and a little fact: the most expensive glass piece in Denver is $45,000. In Boulder a hand-blown glass ship is worth $60,000.

The bus then heads to Native Roots Apothecary. Through an agreement, they get VIP treatment, their own budtenders and special deals for the day.

Then it’s lunch time. By now participants are hungry, no doubt.

After lunch the bus heads to Medicine Man to see how a grow room works.

Every other Sunday, as part of the all-inclusive package, tourists take a cooking class at Ester Cooking School with Chef Blaine Alexander, founder of Conscious Confections. Chef Alexander teaches the tourists how to make edibles like a gluten-free trail mix and for Halloween THC popcorn balls. The tourists are served a meal when they get there, but it’s all about education.

Tour guides are very attentive how much is consumed. Most states don’t have anything close in strength to Colorado’s marijuana. Altitude is also a factor. They employ follow cars in case someone feels they’ve consumed too much. The car returns them to their room to sleep it off.

At the beginning of the tour they are given a consumption advisory advising to eat only 5mg, while the law allows 10mg since, they are aware, tourists will probably do more than recommended.

Tourists aren’t allowed to consume where not legal, they must comply with the laws and are given good knowledge of what is legal and what is not. This reflects My 420 Tours’ attitude of stepping forward as a professional company. They don’t want to be viewed as a bunch of stoners who just jumped on a bus one day.

“We are not a company that advises doing anything illegal,” explained Jenny.

The Future

Jenny envisions, with a little knowledge and a little education, when tourists return home they will tell their friends and spread the word that this is a legit company with their safety in mind. It seems the 21st century social experiment may be more than just about revenue numbers, but about a long underground culture coming into the light.

This year’s Great American Beer Festival promises to have a foray of events. But not all will be centered on the Convention Center and that’s a good thing since tickets sold out in less than 15 minutes. Many events will be attended by brewers, writers, sales reps, industry goers and fans at several peripheries such as breweries, brewpubs and tap houses. The Falling Rock Tap House, a long time hub for event goers and beer fans alike will be packing in it in with several hundred beers being tapped this week, many of which are no longer in existence or are very rare. With some 4,000 breweries statewide, and 300 alone in Denver, you can imagine the party will be grand. The beer will be flowing and if you consider a packed house in each location pouring one pint a minute you’re talking about some 24 million pints an hour. That doesn’t include the Convention Center, the epicenter of this week’s festival. 

Beer History 101

The Great American Beer Festival was started by the Brewer’s Association, an association stated by one of the most recognized names in craft beer, Charlie Papazian. Papazian’s book, The Complete Joy of Homebrewing has been the bible for home brewers for nearly half a century. With the start of his magazine, Zymurgy, he launched a movement from his small house in Boulder, Colorado. The move has snowballed over the decades as the Great American Beer Festival was created. Modeled in many ways by the Great British Beer Festival in England there would be one great exception: the GABF would be a place not for competing, but a place for craft brewers to come together. This event could be more considered a family reunion than a competition. True, metals are given, but there is more connectivity than anything else. Papazian brought this point through with his motto: A rising tide floats all boats; a motto that echoes across the world as more nations birth their own craft beer scenes.
