“Firm, intense and full bodied, the 2009 Salsipuedes shows dark fruit and earth, with hints of cinnamon and sassafras in the nose. In tasting, the sappy, juicy flavors in this young pinot noir are delicious upfront, with cherry and blackberry flavors that have both spicy character and ripeness to the fruit. Tannin is evident in both the dark color and lengthy finish, with cedar and tea leaf flavored tannins that are persistent and leave a minerally, aftertaste.”

The Logan, a new apartment building in Capitol Hill is making a name for itself. Constructed with the environment in mind, it's five stories and 57 units fill the block of 6th and Logan with a new, unique look. The building, the first new apartment building to be constructed in the area for many years, is not only green, but a wonderful sight to behold.

Green Living in Denver

Modern without feeling pretentious, it's clean and warm appearance will make it a sought after place to call home. The modern feel extends past the exterior of the building and saturates the floor plans with a hip and open look. Many apartment buildings in the area are old buildings that have been repurposed for shared living, or living spaces that have simply been renovated time and time again. This building went from blueprint to construction with the sole purpose of making great, green homes for residents. Parking, a major issue for some residents of the neighborhood, will not be a factor as they have plans for an underground garage to accommodate residents vehicles.

Capitol Hill on the Rise

The emergence of this newly constructed apartment building is a good sign for the Capitol Hill neighborhood. Amid controversy over safety and the true walk-ability of the area, the construction of such a grand project is a clear indication that the area is making measures to improve residential morale.

Diverse and Close to Almost Everything Denver

The area is diverse, struggling with the traffic of such major roadways as Colfax and Broadway. The neighborhoods more recent days have been accentuated by the increase in rental properties and some major additions and deletions from the surrounding recreation. The construction of a new apartment building indicates that the area, as some may have feared, is not the same Cap-Hill of generations past.  The neighborhood, like most Denver hot-spots, is changing before our eyes. Winter in Denver yields some pretty fantastic recreation for residents. If you've already seen Zoo Lights, enjoyed the Nutcracker, marveled at the Blossoms of Light and sipped hot coco while soaking in the riot of holiday cheer and light at Civic Center Park, then it's probably time you made it over to Skyline park to glide across the Southwest Rink.

This will be the third year that the rink will grace the park, allowing residents yet another great outdoor winter recreation. The best part about this particular option is that you don't have to drive to the mountains to partake! The park is located off 16th and Arapahoe, right in the heart of downtown Denver's 16th Street Mall.

The site used to be known for a landscape architecture park designed by Lawrence Halprin. The park was demolished and redone in an effort to make it more accessible to the public. The presence of the ice rink is a clear sign that the park has indeed fulfilled it's promise with the reconstruction, and the park is more pleasing to the public than ever.
    
If you already have skates, the rink is free to glide on. If you don't have a pair of ice skates to bring, do not fret, as rentals are available for the low cost of two dollars.

There will be a montage of great events going on while the rink is operational including live music, lessons and entertainment for the whole family. The rink will be open until mid February so you'll have plenty of time to check it out. It's central location makes it easy to get to, and with plenty of dining and retail options nearby, it's a wonderful addition to any holiday outing. The Southwest Rink at Skyline Park is a family-friendly, low-cost way to get into the holiday spirit in downtown Denver.

Piculit Neri is a native vine re-discovered by Emilio Bulfon.  The vine has red grapes not to be confused with the White Picolit or the Friulan Red Picolit.  It is grown only in the region of Castelnuovo del Friuli and Pinzano al Tagliamento as required by specific regional regulations.  Emilio Bulfon is a wine maker that has taken in upon himself to cultivate varietals that were almost or were have thought to have been extinct.  He revitalizes heirloom vines and varietals to breath new life into old world wines.  All of his wines include grapes that are rarely seen in wine making this century.

Denver and it's surrounding suburbs have been under some serious construction over the past few years. With the constant growth of the Light Rail and new high rises popping up all over town, the pulse of Denver real estate has never been stronger. Homes are selling at a record pace, new home construction rates are soaring, and residents have every reason to believe that the real estate industry is alive and well in Colorado.

A complete transformation at Stapleton

A testament to the booming industry is what is going on in Stapleton. Residents who have been in Denver for an excess of twenty years have seen the area go from an abandoned airport to a beautiful community just to the east of downtown Denver. Complete with many excellent dining options, a family friendly feel and plenty of nearby recreation (like a movie theater), the area appears to be a rather self sufficient community.

With nearly 14,000 residents right now, it is one of the biggest neighborhoods in Denver. Plans for several new neighborhoods north of I-70 will nearly double the size of Stapleton. The new neighborhoods are being built with eco-conscious hands, and will have no problem selling in one of the most sought after areas to raise a family near downtown Denver.

According to an article in the Denver Post, the question at the center of everyone's mind is not whether or not the area will do well, but rather what is to be done with the iconic air control tower that construction is racing toward. Though no decisions have been made to date, the idea that the tower be preserved seems like a good way to pay homage to the sites past uses. After all, Stapleton Airport is undoubtedly an iconic portion of Colorado's history.

Despite what ends up being done with the tower, the fact remains that one of Denver's most successful new neighborhoods is about to get a lot bigger, and we could not be more excited to see it happen.

Congratulations to Julia Dixon who won a bottle of the Poggio Ai Ginepri Super Tuscan.  Julia we would love to hear what you thought about the wine on our facebook page.  This week we are continuing our partnership with Amendment XXI wines with our Uncorked In Lohi wine a week giveaway.  We have chosen a 2010 bottle of the Maverick Zinfandel from Four Vines out of Amador County California.

“This Zinfandel lives on the edge of conventionality and crazy: Part tarry molasses.  Part brambly berry.  All in Maverick’s one-of-a-kind balanced and weighty style.  Elevated aromas of baked berry pie, licorice, and pepper intermingle with oak notes of vanilla and mesquite.  The Jam Bomb delivers again with a brambly blueberry middle surrounded by ripe flavors of boysenberry and blackberry.  A big splash of Barbera, together with a little Petite Sirah and Mourvedre keep this wine rocking your palate from its jammy start to its velvety berry/cinnamon finish.”

This week we are doing the Poggio Ai Ginepri Super Tuscan.  A Super Tuscan is an Italian red blend typically made up of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.  This is a Bordeaux blend, meaning a use of grapes typical to the Bordeaux region.

This particular wine is a blend of 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, and 30% Syrah. 

“Intense and deep red colour with purple reflexes.  On the nose intense and fresh with flowery aromas of violets and balsamic hints combined to red fruit like cherries, plumbs and blackberries.  The palate is round, complex with ripen and sweet tannins.  Nice fruity aftertaste with good acidity, which offers a long lingering and fresh finish”

This particular vintage, 2010, each grape was vinified separately.  Each wine was fermented in stainless steel barrels for 10-20 days and then part of the wine was further fermented in oak barrels for 8 months, while some of the wine remained in stainless steel barrels before they were all combined.  The oak helps to give the wine a nice earthiness, while the stainless steel helps to maintain balance to the oak.

For anyone who is a Cabernet Sauvignon drinker a Super Tuscan is a nice departure, while still staying reminiscent to some familiar flavors.  Our friend's at Amendment 21 wines highly recommends this Super Tuscan for any full bodied wine lovers.  For your chance to win this bottle enter through our facebook page.  Winners are announced every Friday.  And once entered, you are eligible for every drawing.  Happy drinking friends!

It has been an exciting year for the real estate market across the country. According to a Denver Post article published last week titled “US New Home Starts Jump to Fastest Pace in 4 Years,” indicates extremely good signs for the real estate industry in the immediate future.

Among the articles many points, the fact that the housing market seems to be in a state of recovery seems to be the heart of the matter.  Builders are more confident in beginning projects, mortgage rates are at lows, rent rates are rising. All of these factors are indications that buying homes will become a more attractive option as compared to renting.

Though new homes represent a small fraction of the current real estate market, it's a very important fraction in terms of the economy and the “big picture.” The construction of new housing creates jobs and generates tax revenue, both of which are of a healing quality to the economy. The fact that homes are now being built at the fastest rate in almost four years is a good indication not only for folks in the Real Estate industry, but it is also a good indication for the economy that has suffered so extensively over the past few years.
